Mustard is grown as an oilseed crop in Pakistan. After cotton, mustard is the second most important source of oil and contributes on an average, about 21 percent in the edible oil production. Mustard seed is a rich source of oil and protein. The seed has oil as high as 46-48 percent; Whole seed meal has 43.6 percent protein. Mustard meal is an excellent feed for animals. They are also planted to grow saag (greens) which are stir-fried and eaten as a vegetable preparation, sarson ka saag. In Pakistan, mustard is sown on 0.5 million acres and its production for seed is 0.2 million tons and for oil is 0.05 million tons. After cotton, mustard is a
major oilseed crop. It is well adapted in temperate region and requires cool temperature for vegetative and reproductive growth.
